Thank you for visiting my #21in2021 fundraising page. I am running 21 marathons in 2021 to support five brilliant charities in their life changing missions, and this page will explain how to donate and help me to transform the lives of others. You can find out more about why I’ve chosen this challenge by reading my vision page, whilst I’ll post regular schedule updates here.

Up until now, I have been using the Virgin Money Giving fundraising page which allowed me to accept donations for my five charities on a single fundraising page. Their forthcoming closure in November 2021 means that I have transferred my fundraising to the Just Giving portal and will have a separate page for each of my charities.

Why I'm doing this...

You can read more about my life here but the summary is of undiagnosed mental illness leading to homelessness and culminating in multiple suicide attempts, the last of which was in 2006.

15 years on, I am so very blessed to have the fullness of life that I have and, some time ago, made a promise to commit my life to helping others avoid what I lived through – to give them a voice, to give hope and dignity.

What they do...

Mind, the mental health charity

Mind is the charity that gave me hope and dignity after that final suicide attempt and the one for which I am so proud to have been an ambassador, fundraiser and campaigner for many years. Their work on both a national and regional level has had an incredible impact on many lives, transforming the way we view mental ill health societally.

Lupus UK

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body, including the skin, joints, and organs inside the body. About 9 out of 10 adults with lupus are women and I have seen it totally dismantle my mother’s quality of life since her diagnosis in 2013, which in itself was six years on from initial symptoms.

Lupus UK are the national charity helping people with the presently incurable illness.

Saint Francis Hospice

Saint Francis Hospice is an independent charity and one of the largest adult hospices in the UK. Our team of specialist consultants, doctors, nurses and a range of other health and social care professionals provide care and support to individuals with a life-limiting illness, as well as their carers and family members, completely free of charge.

My wonderful mother-in-law volunteered there for sixteen years and was due to spend her final weeks before she passed away in May 2021.

Football Beyond Borders

Football was a massive part of my recovery from mental illness. FBB supports young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who are passionate about football but disengaged at school in order to help them finish school with the skills and grades to make a successful transition into adulthood. They do this by providing long-term, intensive support, built around relationships and young people’s passions, in the classroom and beyond.

The Running Charity

Homelessness and mental illness often go hand in hand and I experienced homelessness, something which frightened me much more than the illness itself. The Running Charity believe that running builds resilience, confidence and self-esteem and use this to improve the lives of 16-25 year-olds who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
